Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Laboratory
The time-resolved nanosecond transient optical absorption apparatus is equipped with an electromagnet having 4” pole pieces that can routinely achieve fields of 1.2 T with a 3” pole gap. The field is measured and controlled with a Lakeshore 450 gaussmeter. Optically-detected magnetic field effect experiments are performed with this apparatus.
Time-resolved EPR and ENDOR experiments are carried out on a Bruker E-680X Pulse-EPR Spectrometer System that is equipped with cryostats for operation down to 2K. The spectrometer operates at X-band (9.5 GHz) as well as W-band (94 GHz). The X-band spectrometer is equipped with a 5 mm split-ring resonator and a 5 mm pulse-ENDOR resonator. A separate resonator and cryostat for CW ENDOR is also available. This spectrometer is also equipped with a nanosecond Nd-YAG/OPO laser system for sample excitation. Th W-band spectrometer has a superconducting magnet and a resonator that can perform both pulse-EPR and pulse- ENDOR experiments. Light irradiation of samples is provided by a fiber optic sample holder couple to the tunable nanosecond pulsed laser. We are also constructing a second X-band instrument to be dedicated to time-resolved experiments using CW microwaves.
A cw Ar ion laser and a wide variety of associated computer, detector, low temperature, and diagnostic hardware is also available.
